The Studio Play Deck
I started my suitmarks project in April of 2020 and I'm beyond excited to bring it to life in a beautiful physical deck that can be used to play card games. This project was my fifth 100 day project and while the pandemic drew the collection out of it’s day by day format, I have loved the process of working with the suits! This deck is the culmination of many, many hours of experimenting with art supplies and learning about the history of suitmarks and playing cards. Each card has a unique piece of art!
Designed in Buffalo, NY and printed in the USA, the full 52 card deck (with 2 jokers) is absolutely lovely and comes packaged in a gorgeous custom box.
Below are some of the original pieces that blossomed into the Studio Play Deck. The artwork was created in a wide range of sizes and media and evolved into a deep body of work. While I knew that playing cards had been around for a long while, I was unaware before this project of the layered meanings contained in both the suits and the numbers. A card outlining some of my findings is included in the deck!
